The Senior Systems Design Engineer I is responsible for leading the design of new products and ensuring that they meet associated requirements for total hearing system including, but not limited to; hearing aids, accessories, manufacturing software, fitting software, mobile applications, programmers, their components and sub-systems. S/He also is responsible for risk analysis, problem solving, and issue resolution along with support of other engineering design teams. S/He must possess effective communication skills, technical expertise, creativity, and internal drive to lead the creation of designs that are recognized as best-in-class in the hearing aid industry. S/He must be able to work well both independently and in a team environment. The Senior Systems Design Engineer I is primarily responsible for interacting with new product development groups; however, may also be responsible for supporting continuation engineering and technology development, as needed. S/He is expected to develop a working knowledge of patient and clinician needs, through establishing relationships with Product Management, Marketing, and /or Sales.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES/RESULTS
Provide leadership for the definition of the system architecture, the system level requirements for hardware, software, features, accessories, and mobile apps and their flow down requirements to relevant subsystems of current and future products

  • Provide execution of requirements development and management, including identification of best practices and use of requirement management tools.
  • Support interaction with cross functional customer facing groups to ensure desired product capabilities are reflected accurately in the architecture description
  • Own Systems Impact Analysis and drive system design options and recommendations for product change requests, scope change requests, and Charter approvals, as appropriate.

Drive, document, and deliver high-level system architecture, design, interfaces, risks, and tradeoffs that support product development schedules.

  • Support creation of system / subsystem architecture design documents (e.g. operational concept, system functionality description, state transition description, sequence diagrams, systems interface description, use cases, verification matrices, etc.).
  • Use requirement management techniques to translate user requirements, design guidelines, and standards into system level requirements.
  • Ensure system requirements are accurate, complete and delivered on time throughout the entire product life cycle.
  • Create / update requirements based on lessons learned (including gaps in legacy requirements), manufacturing data, field data (Customer First, Rework and Repair), quality data, and regulatory or standards updates.
  • Support derivation of system requirements into subsystem requirements.
    Generate and maintain traceability from user requirements to system requirements.
    Own and drive risk analysis and mitigation plans in collaboration with the program / project team per the risk register or DFMEA process.
  • Understand and provide direction on system-level design tradeoffs.
  • Facilitate cross-functional peer review of requirements; own and drive resulting action items.

Ensure that all system requirements are met.

  • Drive compliance assessments for each design review during the product lifecycle
  • Support Systems Verification Engineers to ensure they have valid verification plans for each integration point of a program / project.
  • Collaborate with Systems Verification Engineers to create the Systems Verification Allocation matrix to ensure verification of the integrated system design.
  • Ensure generation and maintain traceability from system verification test results for the program / project to system requirements.

Identify, analyze, own, and drive system-level technical issues

  • Ensure technical issues identified during system development and verification are documented with clear descriptions of steps to reproduce and configuration under test in relevant tools.
  • Ensure technical issues are analyzed and that the results are clearly documented in relevant tools.
  • Provide regular updates on issues assigned in relevant tools.
  • Own and drive technical issues to resolution working with cross-functional team members.

Perform other duties commensurate with a "senior" engineer role.

  • Perform work with little to no supervision as department subject-matter expert
  • Mentor, coach and provide work direction to junior engineers, technicians and interns.
    Proactively own and drive process improvements and lean product development efforts.
  • Prevention and proactive ownership of critical product development and process problems within Systems Engineering and product development programs.
  • Use experience and critical thinking skills to make appropriate design decisions and design tradeoff recommendations in Systems Engineering and Program / Project design and peer reviews.
  • Proactive participation in creation and/or updating of Systems Engineering's Budget, Scorecard and Objectives for the upcoming year.

Perform Program or Project Tech Lead Role and /or Program Systems Design Lead Role as assigned.

  • Facilitate technical meetings for program / project.
  • Drive cross-functional technical risk assessments for program / project.
    Coordinate and drive cross-functional test planning, gap analysis, execution and reporting.
  • Own and drive program / project technical issue visibility and resolution.

Support the Program / Project Manager by providing impact analysis of program / project schedules on any technical work, deliverables and dependencies.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education, Certification and Experience Requirements
Education

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Systems Engineer or related field
  • Masters in lieu of Bachelors with minimum of 5 years of industry experience in a product and/or technology development environment


Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in a product and/or technology development environment

Knowledge / Technical Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of system engineering principles, including: requirement generation, system architecture, system design, risk management, verification, use cases, configuration management, issue tracking
  • Intermediate working knowledge of hearing aid architecture and design, hearing aid audiological features, programming software, manufacturing software, and hearing aid mobile applications.
  • General to intermediate working knowledge of one or more of the following:
    • analog, digital, mixed signal circuits
    • multi-component electrical devices, PC interfaces, communication protocols, digital design, DSP, wired and wireless communication
    • signal processing concepts, Including: block diagrams, filters, Fourier analysis, audio, acoustics
    • software development process, source code control, version control, high and low level programming languages.

Competencies, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability in problem solving and troubleshooting
    Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency in using typical bench-top equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, signal generators, audio analyzers, spectrum analyzers, voltmeters, etc.)
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work in fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to work with minimal guidance to make decisions and report progress
  • Demonstrated leadership role in projects, including ability to provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced technical personnel
  • Experience with systems engineering processes, such as requirements management, configuration management, issue tracking tools, etc.
  • Proven ability to perform complex engineering analysis and calculations
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently manage time, establish priorities, and direct the work of more junior engineers
